RE: Rusty Frame

Happens. On the trailers I'm rebuilding, I use a wire brush and paint with rustoleum. This is a chance to see if you have any frame cracks. (Unlikely)

RE: Best camping season is just around the corner

Agree! We leave June - August for families with children and start camping from Sept to June. Here in Virginia and NC, the best camping is in the fall watching the beautiful colors and don't forget the warm days and cool nights. Don't get me wrong, we have 8 grandchildren and love them dearly but it's nice to go camping without hearing the noise and having the solitude.

RE: OLD CAMPERS (many photos included)

Hey Prof
I think I have that old Smokey. It is sitting out in back of my barn waiting to be restored. It needs a new ceiling and upholstery, probably start it in the spring. I have a 14 foot vacationaire and a 22" mobile traveler to finish first. Rebuilding old trailers is a UN-profitable hobby I have but have to do something in my retirement.

RE: New to RV'ing/Looking at airstreams

My Airstream is a 65 Safari 22 foot. Cost me 1000 and put 5000 into restoring. Did all the work myself. In the 40 some years we have been camping I have had them all, motorhomes, popups, truckcampers and I would not trade my Safari for any trailer except another airstream. People say they don't have enough storage...If you can't fit it in then you don't need it. No ducted air...come on now, your camping! Expensive? You bet they are but how many 43 year old trailers do you see on the road. etc. etc. etc.

RE: New to forum and new (old) 1973 Sprite

Welcome. Looks like a nice camper. Now you can join the TCT club. Keep a watch on E-bay for the tailights, might find them at tractor supply or Northern tool. If not replace the whole light with something close.

RE: Best place to buy a Deep Cycle Battery?

Just bought a Grp 27 at Costco past Monday, 66 bucks + tax. The one I replaced lasted 7 years using a Intelli-power 9100 converter with charge wizard. Hope I have the same luck.

RE: State and Federal Donut Hole

I see your point but we only camp from Sunday to Thursday so never have a problem getting a good site by just showing up. My neighbor reserves every weekend from Memorial day to Labor day which irratates the heck out of me cause that is misusing the system, but I guess that is his right.

RE: Considering Ives Run PA? Read this

I read that too on the Rec.gov website. We will be staying there for a night next month as a stopover so access to the lake won't matter. In fact, it may not be as crowded.

RE: ultra crt st 225/75r15 tires

It seems with every single ST being made overseas these days, not one single brand is quality and reliable! I recently spent DAYS researching everything currently on the market and your head hurts after reading these forums, reviews on tire dealer sites, eopinions, BBB complaints, and on and on... It's basically trying to pick what's the lesser of the evils, like our politicians , and leaves you with a bad feeling in your stomach...
Travel trailers are expensive. We haul them for fun with our families. So why to we have to settle for tires that are OK based on statistics? That's actually how it shakes out for Carlisles and Marathons - they will tell you statistically they are good tires? What? Because you corner the market with tires coming out of primarily 3 plants overseas (different brands molded side-by-side with the same compounds and belting materials), have them put on every trailer possible, it's statistically OK for them to blow out at speed causing thousands in damage if not worse? I, for one, would like to know how many blowouts are NOT reported.
In trying to find replacements for my Carlisle junk that cracked all over on a less than 1 year-old camper (tire DOT code puts them just over 1 year), I actually find big tire dealers are no longer even selling trailer tires because of the constant problems with them! Good grief! I ultimately had the choice of getting another set of Carlisles from Carlisle, could only find Carlisle, Marathon, and TowMaster locally, or have something shipped to me and put on. I decided to give Maxxis a try, but they too have negative comments...
Seems if someone would make a quality ST tire, they'd have a market for them! It's hard to believe with the popularity of travel trailers the big names stop making STs themselves and have instead put their name in imported junk. Sorry for the rant, but it's frustrating!
Well said.

More Carlisle bashing? There is also a post today about Marathons failing. If anyone here knows of a perfect ST tire, lets hear it!

RE: is this worth it

I just bought a 1970 Vacationaire for $100.00 and a 1972 Midas for $200.00 to restore. So $500.00 would be in the fair range for a late 70's. It depends on how bad you want it.
http://lh4.ggpht.com/scooter083/R3E8o9in82I/AAAAAAAAAGI/3OIyHpl29Jc/flooronframe.jpg height=400 width=286
When I restore I remove the skin and replace all bad wood. If floor is bad I completely disassemble to the frame and replace anything that is questionable.

http://lh5.ggpht.com/scooter083/R3E8pNin85I/AAAAAAAAAGg/1VLcDm0mTJs/finished4.jpg?imgmax=512 height=512 width=365
I prefer the bad ones cause if I have to strip, it's easier to go whole hog.

RE: Old TT Dumps Grey Water on the Ground?

68's did not have a gray water tank. We use a 5 gallon kerosene container to catch the gray water on both of our trailers. See sig.
Rubiranch is right, trailers before 73 did not have tanks for gray water. I have a 1970 16' (no gray water tank) and a 73 22' (gray water tank) I'm working on right now.
If my memory serves me, they banned phosphates in soaps around 1973. At that time I owned a small grocery and had to remove all soaps from shelves and replace.

RE: Window Air Conditioner

I installed a 5000 BTU unit in the side of my little 12' trailer. It sticks out 5" which makes the total width of 90". I cut the hole exactly the size of the AC (11 1/2 x 17") It cools the trailer real nice. I have seen several installed like mine and you don't loose a window. I also saw one installed on heavy duty drawer slides so it could be pulled in when traveling.

If you sell it, you'll be sorry later on. Keep it another year and think again. Once a camper always a camper.

RE: more seems to be the answer

Instead of me going there I'm staying here and instead of you coming here you are stay there. Many people are staying close to home and not spending money on the gas. The campgrounds have locals and not so many tourists, which keeps them in business.
